Surface was my indoctrination into editorial fashion back in the late nineties when the magazine stood out as an arresting mix of avant garde design and sleek sophistication. It begot many imitators and helped launch the careers of some notable talent. It also helped launch me into the Manhattan editorial fashion terrarium. The magazine has since transmogrified into a minimalist design journal, but it was once a newsstand efflorescence of fashion’s more audacious explorations.
